Right Tools for Pond Fish
Constructing a fish pond can be start with preparation of right tools. Fish pond in the
park requires filter equipment, water fall or skimmer. Skimmer or usually called as protein skimmer
is an equipment to filter or throw the organic particles from the aquarium or pond. This equipment
basically consist of a column or plastic tube where the air bubble is flowed inside the tube
through the water column inside the tube. If filter is not also function to aerate the water, then
the other aeration device like waterfall or fountain is required. Beside that, pond also need
liner. If you use tap water, it will need special treatment to take out the chlorine. For finishing
touch, you can add decorative stone / natural stone, statue or plants. It maybe useful to get
advice from the landscape architect.
Sometimes it is difficult to choose fish pond liner. The simple way is by choosing the preformed
pond liner that can be arranged and shaped inside the land. If you want the flexible fish pond
liner, choose EPDM pond liner or flexible plastic that can be cut or formed to fit the unique
contours of the pond dimensions, allowing a more unique design. Rubber pond liner is more durable
and can stand to UV light compared to plastic pond liner. The most durable rubber

using Ethylene Propylene Diene monomer (EPDM) material.
Pond Size
Pond size will depend on the location where the pond will be placed. The number of fishes to be put
inside the pond should be fit with the pond size. When you have planned the pond size, you should
calculate how much fishes to be put inside the pond. Generally, one golden fish will need 50
gallons water. For koi pond, the minimal depth ± 4 ft 6 inch (137.2 cm). Consider that fish will
grow faster, so don't compare when first time you buy the fishes, it seems that the pond is too big
for the fishes.
Choose The Fishes Carefully
If the pond fish is ready, you need to purchase the fishes carefully. Choose golden fish or koi.
For golden fish, choose ordinary golden fish, shubunkins, comets, wakins, jikins, watonai or sabao,
avoid choose fancy golden fishes as they can not live inside the pond. Pay attention on fish color,
choose the bright color, this will enhance the beauty of your pond. Don't buy the weak fish, fish
with white spot on their bodies, or fish with damage or lose fin.
What Can Harm The Fish in The Pond
When the pond has been filled with fishes, observe some problems that could kill your fishes inside
the pond. Pond water pH must be between 6.8 and 8.0 and the water pH should be controlled regularly
using the water tester tool. In proper filter system can make the fish lack of oxygen. Make sure
the filter and pump inside the pond work properly to avoid fishes gasp on the pond surface. Fish
can get disease. You should observe the signs of fish sick, and treat fish immediately or remove
the sick fish. Chlorine also can kill the fish. Water that contain chlorine should be treated first
before used as water pond.
